Nix5150's #1 Frankenstrat build (in progress)

Postby Nix5150 » Fri Sep 09, 2011 10:29 am

Hi all hoplefully through all the threads ive read through i should be able to make at least a decent and almost accurate frankenstrat for my first one ever ive done the vh 1 guitar at least 3 times and ive got that down to a T.

Ok well first off id like to thank chillybeef for his templates.

I will be going for the relic look of a few of eds pics of his vh1 which i will show and then of course i will add a few more that i see in forums most notably steveu1s, pcr and frankenstrat and chillybeef list goes on lol

•here will be my build list

Divebomb monster replica body
Musikraft frankenstrat neck
divebomb pickguard
divebomb neck and possibly switch not sure yet
seymour duncan 78model pickup
evh or gibson low friction pot 500k
switchcraft mono jack
stratocaster jack plate
schaller mini locking tuners left style
screws that ive aged
1971 quarter
oh and obviuously orignal floyd rose with old style arm

For paint and tape
•tape im gonna use 3m fine line variants of 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 and 1"

Paint i will be using duplicolor black, and white and will be going with super red II also from duplicolor

Unfortuanately due to crappy job this build may take awhile so im going to mainly focus on trying to get the body as accurate i can from everyones builds and talks over broken screws aging etc
mainly because im not to worried on how parts will fit on because that can alwasy be changed later on and as long as it plays good and has good tone thats all im shootin for as for that

so i will be ordering the body hoplefully next thursday and then i can finally start on the paint job

for now here are a few pics of what i have

Alright the only thing ive actually done for my project so far is aged some screws i won't be using them all though i will be using the pickguard screw up in front

thanx to chillybeef for the info i will show you pics on how to do this bc thats what i wanted when i looked through here and there was no clear pics just pics of them already done and explaining it. theres is no salt water pic but i will take one to make this complete lol

•Here is step by step for how to age screws..
first u need a container of some sort u want to pour bleach into 1/4 full or 1/2 a cup works basically just enough to submerge your screws let sit for 6 hours
Image

after 6 hours also i recommend doing this at around 12 to 3 depending on how late you stay up for instance i did the original ones in my pic from 11 to 5 pm, after the 6 hours wash the screws off and get another container i have these little plastic ones but u can use the same one, just dump the bleach out when done, second now your going to put normal salt water kinda alot of salt in the water and you can warm it up if u want too but you don't have too place your screws back in and wait till the next day when you wake up or whenever your not busy look in your container and your screws should look like this :) enjoy

Yes, that looks pretty close. the middle one looks kind of big, but it's hard to visualize at this point. I would just work your way up until it looks right to you.

I personally don't age my quarters, except I do rub some ashes on them to make them look old. Maybe a touch of black shoe polish to exagerate the shape of the head, and the edges, to suggest it's old and beat up. I also accidently dinged it up with a screwdriver, and it certainly makes it look nice and beat up in direct light

nothing to worry about though, I'm sure eddie's quarter doesn't have any marks worth noting

Alrighty after lookin through some pics (the seymour duncan pics of the franky and some fellow halens quarters) i got my quarter placement holes and sizes (roughly)***

•heres a pic of where i used a punch to center out my holes the black is where id like them to be but after punching i realized it possibly could have made hold bigger than i wanted and would show in finalization of the quarter so i stuck with them i would have liked to make the left arrow a smidge up and the bottom arrow to the left but i think it turned out nice
Image

•heres a pic of me doing the chip on the I in liberty i used the smallest key file and slowly chizzed it i also took a normal file and used the edge of to form a upside triangle and as a starting for the roundness of the keyfile
Image

•here's result before aging small holes are a 1/8" drill bit and big one in center is a 3/16th
Image

•pic of what i did to age i used some ashes and from taking screws out of the bleach for aging when you place them on a paper towel it left some of the rust color liquidfied so i smeared a bit of that on there as well
Image

•here is the final result let me know what you guys think im very open to suggestions and opinions :D Note* the chip by the I is the same as pic above i know in this pic it makes it looked messed up lol

Looks good so far. If you have not ordered your stuff yet, I would stay away from Divebomb altogether. Just do a search on this site and you quickly see why.

The body and neck I got from Musikraft were excellent and they are very professional to deal with.

If you haven't yet ordered from DB, I would give mitch a shot...Even though he wasn't able to contact me, to confirm payment, I will be receiving the body tomorrow, less than 2 weeks after paying...Mitch ships FAST...VERY fast...Even though he seems to be having issues, he still made it right for me, just like everyone suggested.
